The open-source port project XPSemu is now available as a standalone application, enabling jailbroken PS5 consoles to run original Xbox games. Built upon the xemu emulator for the original Xbox, the project is still in its early Alpha 1 stage and currently only supports PS5 consoles that are jailbroken and running firmware version 13.6.
XPSemu provides an interface close to that of the original Xbox and allows players to set parameters individually for different games. However, compatibility and actual performance vary across titles.
In current tests, Halo 2 reportedly achieves 30 FPS with default settings, and around 36 to 50 FPS during combat after applying a 60 FPS patch; Crash Bandicoot: The Wrath of Cortex is described as running smoothly. More demanding titles perform worse: Fable: The Lost Chapter often drops to 10–20 FPS in complex areas and cannot maintain a stable 30 FPS, while the original Forza Motorsport runs at approximately 15–21 FPS during races.
Jailbreaking may also result in bans from PSN for your console or account, along with risks such as voiding warranties, inability to update normally, exposure to malware, and hardware damage. Legal issues related to game emulation should also be considered. Therefore, at this stage, XPSemu is more akin to an early experimental project for tech-savvy enthusiasts rather than a plug-and-play compatibility feature for average PS5 users.
