Free Horror Demo "Playable Archives" Launches on Steam! Praised for Intense Scares

The free horror demo Playable Archives is now available on Steam, with a playtime of approximately 30 to 45 minutes. Derived from DarkStone Digital's cancelled title Paranormal Activity: The Threshold, a GameSpot author reported feeling deeply unsettled by its scares after completing the demo.

The demo adopts a first-person camera perspective, with a storyline involving a police investigation into anomalous events at a residence. Players need to review footage, solve occult puzzles, and gradually piece together what happened at the scene. The author listed it among the few gaming experiences that truly unsettled them and recommended horror game enthusiasts try it during Halloween.

Studio owner Brian Clarke described the release of this demo as a form of "personal healing" in a press statement. He did not want the team's long-term efforts to be shelved like cursed objects. Although the full game will not be released and some content had to be removed, the team still wished to preserve the work they had completed.

The author also compared this title to P.T.: while the latter was initially released as a teaser experience before its full project was cancelled, Playable Archives saw its remaining demo released months after the full game's cancellation. The author believes the final product showcases DarkStone Digital's horror design prowess and considers Paramount's decision to let go of the team a mistake.
