Firaxis has acknowledged that some changes made to reshape the Civilization series in Civilization VII went too far, alienating some long-time players. The studio is adjusting relevant mechanics based on feedback, aiming to provide a fresh experience for new players while preserving the series' core features valued by veterans.
Executive Producer Dennis Shirk stated that the team adopted several bold changes to reinvent the series, but some designs exceeded appropriate bounds. The controversial era transition mechanic requires players to switch from one civilization to another upon entering a new era.
Creative Director Ed Beach previously explained that this system is designed to allow different historical cultures to fully showcase their unique abilities during their respective peaks, avoiding the issue in previous titles where some civilizations could only leverage their traits in the late game. However, some players feel that switching civilizations weakens the experience of guiding the same nation through its entire historical journey.
Firaxis subsequently introduced an option to retain the same civilization throughout an entire playthrough via the "Test of Time" update and has repeatedly gathered community feedback during development updates. Studio Head Heather Hazen stated that the team will continue to listen to player opinions and refine the game, but this does not mean Firaxis will abandon the overall direction of Civilization VII.
