Capcom senior executive Jun Takeuchi stated that the current storyline of Resident Evil may reach its conclusion within the next decade. This development will not be accomplished through a single game but will instead be gradually wrapped up across multiple titles.
In a commemorative interview, Jun Takeuchi revealed that Capcom established a ten-year brand strategy while preparing for the Resident Evil 2 remake project. However, the story details were not fully determined from the start; instead, they continued to expand with each new release, making the connection of different narrative elements a significant challenge. He also hinted that there are specific reasons behind the release order of the series' remakes.
Reflecting on the series' evolution, Jun Takeuchi mentioned the limitations of the development environment for the original title, as well as the resistance encountered when Resident Evil 4 shifted from a mansion to a village setting and adopted an over-the-shoulder perspective. Regarding Resident Evil 6, which faced criticism from long-time fans, he believed that while the game incorporated various ideas from previous entries, it lacked a distinct and fresh identity. Subsequently, Resident Evil 7 re-emphasized horror through its first-person perspective.
Resident Evil: Requiem continues this direction, allowing players to switch between first-person and third-person perspectives. The game introduces new character Grace alongside Leon S. Kennedy, with its storyline connected to Resident Evil 7. Jun Takeuchi stated that this title marks a clear pause point for the series' first decade, suggesting that the current story arc is expected to conclude within the next ten years. He did not disclose how many titles would be released during this period, only confirming that it would not be just one.
