Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 Sees Decline in Player Count on Xbox and Steam

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 has officially launched. While the single-player campaign has received positive reviews from many media outlets, third-party statistics show that the game's initial player count on Xbox consoles and Steam is lower than that of previous entries in the series.

According to public data from TrueAchievements and SteamDB, Xbox player activity has dropped by approximately 32% compared to its predecessor, Black Ops 7. On Steam, the peak concurrent player count reached around 227,000, marking a nearly 26% decline from Black Ops 6's peak of 306,000.

Notably, Black Ops 6 was added to the Xbox Game Pass subscription library on its launch day, whereas Modern Warfare 4 will not be included until the 2027 holiday season. Players must purchase the game at the full price of $70 to experience it. Logically, the lack of a free subscription option should have boosted Steam player numbers, but the actual results were lower.

The $70 price hike is seen as a potential factor, with many Xbox users accustomed to playing via Xbox Game Pass unwilling to pay the full price. However, the issue cannot be attributed solely to pricing. Firstly, COD's Steam statistics include other modules sharing the same launcher, such as Warzone, leading to some data inaccuracies. Secondly, while the campaign has received decent reviews, community complaints about matchmaking and balance in multiplayer modes may affect player retention. External factors, such as heavy competition and players' time being diverted to other new releases, must also be considered.

A drop in online player numbers does not equate to commercial failure. The game still topped the Steam sales charts after release. Activision has not yet disclosed complete financial or sales reports, so it is too early to make a definitive judgment on the game's overall success or failure.
