Rockstar UK Employees to Vote in November on Formal Recognition of IWGB Union

Rockstar UK employees will vote from November 12 to 26 on whether the company should formally recognize the Independent Workers' Union of Great Britain (IWGB). The vote concerns employee representation and is unrelated to the release schedule of GTA VI, although it coincides with the game's planned release date of November 19.

Employees and management have agreed on the terms of the recognition agreement. The agreement will allow employees to voice their opinions on issues such as pay and bonuses, overtime, layoffs, flexible working arrangements, and generative AI policies. The IWGB stated that if the vote succeeds, the organization will become the largest formally recognized union in the UK games industry.

This vote also coincides with an ongoing employment dispute being heard in the same month. Rockstar laid off 31 employees about a year ago, and those affected, along with the IWGB, argue that this move was intended to suppress unionization. Closing arguments in the employment tribunal case involving Rockstar, the IWGB, and the laid-off employees are scheduled for November 17–18. The court will then need time to determine whether Rockstar violated employment laws; the allegations have not yet been confirmed by a ruling.

Shanti Easton-Steel, a member of the Rockstar Games Workers Union Committee, stated that the vote is crucial for employees to gain transparency in decisions that affect them. She also highlighted concerns regarding the gender pay gap, evolving overtime pay policies, and job security after game releases.
