Nicolas Bouvier, the former Art Director of the cancelled Mass Effect 5 project, recently expressed that it is "heartbreaking" that the work completed by the team will never be shown to the public.
Bouvier, who has nearly 30 years of industry experience and worked on series such as Halo and Assassin's Creed, stated that he was responsible for the art direction of Mass Effect 5 from April 2026 until one week before the announcement of the project's cancellation. During this period, the team explored new creative directions while striving to uphold the traditions and spirit of the Mass Effect trilogy.
Bouvier described the team as united, experienced, and highly collaborative, calling it an honor to have worked with its members. He expressed regret that the public will not see the team's成果 (results) and mentioned that he has not yet decided on his next steps, planning to take a break before making any decisions. BioWare has previously announced its closure and the cancellation of the Mass Effect 5 project currently in development, stating that its current focus is on supporting the teams affected during the studio's shutdown.
Science fiction writer Derek Künsken later confirmed that he and Catherynne Valente had both worked on the project. He described this collaboration as one of the significant experiences of his writing career and expressed hope that the approximately 50 affected employees would receive recognition and successfully find new jobs.
The future direction of the Mass Effect series remains uncertain. Former Executive Producer Mark Darrah believes that EA might be willing to sell the intellectual property in the future.
