Turn Your PS5 into a Steam Console: Free Launcher Runs Steam Games on Jailbroken Consoles

The PS5 is typically a closed system that only runs software officially approved by Sony. However, Playden, an open-source project recently detailed on Reddit by developer Leo Lobato, can bypass this restriction to some extent. Available on GitHub, this launcher allows users to install and run Windows games from their Steam library directly on the PS5. The prerequisite is that the console must be jailbroken. Although Sony attempts to block such modifications through firmware updates, the homebrew community continues to discover new security vulnerabilities.

Technically, Playden relies on a specially modified version of the Wine compatibility layer to run Windows games on the PS5. Users can log into Steam, browse their game library, and download games directly. Installed games even appear alongside regular console titles in the PS5's main menu.

Turning a modded PS5 into a PC-like gaming device is nothing new. We recently reported on the new pLinux5-NG bootloader, which allows jailbroken PS5 consoles to install Linux systems.

Many games are already compatible, but limitations remain

Since its launch on October 12, Playden has already built an impressive compatibility list. Supported titles include well-known games such as Resident Evil 4, Hollow Knight, Vampire Survivors, and even Cyberpunk 2077. However, popular PC games like Counter-Strike 2, BeamNG.drive, and Garry's Mod currently do not work.

The developers also pointed out that the software is still in alpha testing, which means users may encounter frequent crashes. Playden will likely require significant development work before it can become a reliable alternative for PC gaming. Looking ahead, the developers plan to add support for other PC gaming platforms, including GOG and Epic Games.
