Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 Creators Discuss the Ending and Conditions for a Series Continuation

Bartosz Sztybor, creator of Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2, stated that the second season's ending should not be simply viewed as a happy conclusion, and is even more ambiguous than the first season. As for a third season or other follow-up stories, he has made no promises at this time, and the series may end with just two parts.

The second season does not resurrect David, nor is it a traditional sequel continuing with the original cast. Instead, it forms a "mirror and dialogue" with the first season through new characters in Night City. Sztybor mentioned that he had conceived stories about other Edgerunners while writing the script for the first season, with related ideas dating back to 2020 or 2021.

The new season continues to focus on the consequences of the characters' choices. Weak is designed as a reverse reflection of David, while D is driven by revenge, once again touching upon the question of "whether sacrifice holds any glory." The Relic chip and the Capricorn project are used to expand the world-building and connect existing themes, with some character relationships also drawing inspiration from 1990s films.

Sztybor believes that after experiencing nine episodes of violence and sorrow, viewers might interpret the glimmer of hope at the end as a happy ending, but the work intentionally allows different audiences to arrive at different conclusions.

He stated that there are still many stories to tell both inside and outside Night City, but CD Projekt RED and the creative team need to first find sufficiently suitable stories, as well as directors, artists, or studios capable of unique expression and completing the work. If these conditions cannot be met simultaneously, the series may not continue. Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 is now available globally on Netflix.
