"Muramasa Rebirth: Kaidan" is scheduled to launch on PS5, Switch, and Switch 2 on February 4, 2027, with the Steam version following on February 5. The development team stated that this is not a simple remake; it retains the original's combat feel and travel pacing while readjusting combat, movement, and visual presentation.
Producer Makoto Shiota and Development Director Wataru Nakanishi explained that in the original game, the 108 secret techniques were fixed to specific swords, meaning many were rarely used in the late game. The new title separates learning and equipping these techniques into an independent system, allowing players to freely combine them as needed to expand their combat options.
The exploration aspect hasn't been expanded by simply enlarging the map or increasing complexity. Instead, side paths, challenge areas, and freely traversable streets have been added. Players can temporarily deviate from the main story to visit higher-level areas. The team has also made overall adjustments to the level design.
The HD remastering process did not involve simply re-exporting old assets. Designers had to meticulously refine textures and add details one by one. Since some of the original source materials were lost, the actual work was close to recreating them from scratch.
Additionally, the team has added various hot spring backgrounds and introduced new dishes for teahouses, soba shops, and kappo restaurants. The development goal is to provide players with more choices while maintaining the original's fast-paced combat, satisfying gameplay, and relaxed travel rhythm.
