Final Fantasy VII Rebirth confirms the inclusion of a three-person synergy mechanic, but players cannot use it freely in regular combat. This ability will only appear during specific moments near narrative climaxes, featuring cinematic presentations.
Director Naoki Hamaguchi stated that the game already features standard abilities, synergy skills, and limit breaks. If higher-tier, universally accessible three-person moves were added, players might rely on them as a fixed solution for victory, making combat monotonous. The triple techs from Chrono Trigger were also cited to illustrate how overly powerful combinations can overshadow other combat options.
Hamaguchi did not confirm whether Aerith would be available as a playable party member. He only stated that the series has always allowed players to form a three-person party from a larger roster, and the combat system remains viable even if one optional member is absent.
The game will also retain many iconic elements from the original, including ultimate weapons, each character's final limit break, and the final one-on-one confrontation between Cloud and Sephiroth.
