Overwatch 2 Game Director Aaron Keller recently reflected on the origins of Overwatch. He believes that the cancellation of Project Titan instilled a culture of humility and resilience from the very beginning, helping the team navigate numerous challenges over the past decade.
Blizzard invested seven years into Project Titan, but this massive multiplayer online project was ultimately cancelled abruptly. The related team then had only six weeks to propose a new concept, with expectations that the new project would have revenue potential competitive with World of Warcraft. Overwatch eventually evolved from the foundations left by this setback.
Keller stated that this team culture was particularly crucial during the low points surrounding the launch of Overwatch 2. Through sustained effort and a renewed focus on the core qualities that initially made Overwatch popular, he believes the team can now take pride in the game being in its "best state ever."
This experience also made the team less inclined to make definitive predictions about the distant future. Keller admitted that ten years ago, it was hard to foresee that the team would still be developing this beloved title today; the team remains highly visionary about Overwatch and looks forward to seeing what it will look like in another decade.
