The awards system traces its origins back to the PlayStation Awards in 1995, later becoming one of the annual events for the Japanese and Asian markets. According to past rules, commercial performance and sales figures are key criteria for selection. The Grand Award is typically given to titles with the highest global sales data, while the Partner Award recognizes other games that have achieved outstanding commercial success.

In recent years, the event has also incorporated player participation and specialized categories. For the previous Users’ Choice Award, candidates were selected from the 30 games with the highest total playtime in Japan and Asia, with the final result determined by player votes. The PlayStation Indies Award recognizes the creativity and achievements of independent developers in Japan and Asia, while the Accessibility Award highlights titles with outstanding accessibility features.

In 2025, Monster Hunter Wilds, Dragon Ball: Sparking! ZERO, Marvel Rivals, and Zenless Zone Zero received the Grand Award, while Silent Hill f and Metal Gear Solid Δ: Snake Eater received the Partner Award. Currently, only the event date has been confirmed for this year; the list of winners for the 2026 awards will be announced at the ceremony.
