GTA 6 Story Objectives Revealed: Both Protagonists Want to Leave the Criminal Life Behind

Currently, we know quite a bit about GTA VI. From the game's crime mechanics to the unique traits of NPCs, Rockstar has gradually revealed more information, giving players a better understanding of this upcoming open-world adventure. However, the studio has remained relatively cautious about the game's story, revealing few details.

This is understandable. Rockstar clearly wants to keep narrative details under wraps before release to avoid spoilers. However, a new in-depth report on the game has provided clearer insight into Jason and Lucia's journey: both seem eager to leave their criminal lives behind.

《GTA6》剧情目标披露:双主角都想退出犯罪共同生活

Edge magazine published a lengthy feature on GTA VI, exploring various aspects of the new title, including its narrative. According to the report, Jason and Lucia's ultimate goal is to retire from crime. This offers a different perspective on what drives these two new protagonists forward.

This could mean that this installment will differ from Grand Theft Auto V. In the previous title, money, material wealth, and power played major roles in each protagonist's story. In GTA VI, Rockstar seems to be exploring more personal themes.

Studio head Rob Nelson acknowledged that many players view the GTA series as a power fantasy, but he stated that Jason and Lucia are seeking more than just that. Money remains one of the factors driving their actions, but the pair seem to have greater aspirations for their lives and their relationship.

Rockstar previously explored similar ideas in Red Dead Redemption 2, particularly through Arthur Morgan's struggle: whether to spend money on himself or use it to support others in the camp. Nelson stated that GTA VI will build upon this concept, giving protagonists more nuanced and complex motivations than simply accumulating wealth.

For Jason and Lucia, their relationship seems to be at the heart of these expectations. At the start of the game, they are already together and "want to give their relationship another chance." Since the game's announcement, their Bonnie and Clyde-inspired partnership has drawn significant attention, but Rockstar also appears keen to explore life beyond criminal activities, including the future they wish to build together.

Of course, whether Jason and Lucia can truly escape the criminal world remains to be seen. Given the series' typical narrative arcs, leaving that life behind is unlikely to be smooth sailing. This may create an intriguing conflict between the life they desire and the actions they must take to achieve their goals.

Edge magazine's in-depth coverage of GTA VI revealed even more. The report unveiled 12 new screenshots and further showcased the vast scale of the Leonida map—developers are still discovering new areas they had never seen before.
