Players discovered through a screenshot that "Backstab," a 6v6 map scheduled for release on November 6 in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4, bears a strong resemblance to "Burgundy," which first appeared in Call of Duty 2 in 2005. The overall layouts of the two maps are said to be nearly one-to-one replicas, but the scene themes have changed significantly.
Reddit user wizward64 created a side-by-side comparison of the two maps. The original "Burgundy" is set in the French countryside during World War II, featuring mostly low-saturation green grasslands and beige brick-and-stone buildings; "Backstab" transforms it into a snowy town. Signs on the map appear to feature Cyrillic letters, leading some analysts to speculate that the location might be in Russia, though this has not been officially confirmed.
"Burgundy" is a smaller map in Call of Duty 2, with a core structure consisting of a central courtyard and two-story buildings facing each other on either side. The high windows of the original buildings featured operable machine guns, making them key positions for controlling the map. Analysts predict that in the faster-paced Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4, these windows may serve more frequently as sniper spots.
Unlike well-known maps such as "Nuketown" or "Shipment" that have returned multiple times, "Burgundy" is a relatively obscure map from the series' earlier titles. This comparison is therefore seen as an excavation of content from the franchise's early days.
Infinity Ward has employed similar practices before: "Neuville" from the original Call of Duty was later reworked into "Taraq" in 2022's Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II, while "Harbor" became "Suldal Harbor" in 2019's Call of Duty: Modern Warfare.
