ARTE France and independent studio Oopsie Daisies have announced that the darkly humorous adventure game Tom the Mailman is now available on Steam for PC and Mac, as well as on Nintendo Switch. Players take on the role of Tom, a new mail carrier in the village, who peeks into residents' lives while delivering packages and decides whether to cause mischief along the way.
Tom can observe the inhabitants through windows, doors, and cracks in the walls. Players can either focus on delivering packages to residents or explore the village in different ways by trampling flower beds, destroying hedges, or swiping items.
Beneath their cute exterior, the villagers and settings carry an unsettling vibe, including a narcissistic mayor, an orphanage that looks like a doghouse, a hippie couple wielding chainsaws, and pigeons selling drugs in the cemetery, cowboy earthworms, and irritable squirrels.
The game features stop-motion animation with a retro feel and hand-drawn scenes. The developers state that the art style combines the innocence of children's picture books with the gritty, absurd tone of Adult Swim, presenting voyeurism and pranks through dark humor. Tom the Mailman is also the first game produced by Oopsie Daisies, created by a team of five members who have known each other for years.
