Sony has just released its financial report for the second quarter of fiscal year 2026. Judging by the various figures, the PlayStation business performed remarkably well, with Sony itself expressing considerable satisfaction with the results. The cumulative global shipments of PS5 have reached 97.9 million units, PlayStation Plus active subscribers hit 127 million, quarterly profits increased by 45% year-over-year, totaling approximately $3.95 billion.
However, there is one less-than-glamorous figure in this financial report: Marvel's Wolverine has only sold 2.4 million copies.
At first glance, selling 2.4 million copies of a game within two months doesn't seem bad, as many publishers dream of achieving such results. However, comparing this figure with other first-party titles from Sony reveals just how awkward Marvel's Wolverine's performance truly is.
In fact, Sony's financial report already provides ready-made comparative data:
Marvel's Spider-Man 2 achieved 2.5 million copies sold on its first day of release
Ghost of Yotei surpassed 3.3 million copies sold within 32 days of release
Uncharted 4: A Thief's End sold 2.7 million copies in its first week
Meanwhile, Marvel's Wolverine has been on the market for seven weeks but still hasn't matched the first-week or even first-day sales figures of any of the aforementioned titles.
Currently, Sony has not disclosed the specific development budget for Marvel's Wolverine. However, it is reported that the development cost for another Marvel game previously developed by Insomniac Games, Marvel's Spider-Man 2, was as high as approximately $300 million.
Even more interestingly, some have noted that the situation appears even more embarrassing when comparing Marvel's Wolverine to the Nintendo Switch exclusive Rhythm Heaven: Miracle Star. According to Nintendo's latest data, as of September 30, Rhythm Heaven: Miracle Star had reached sales of 2.89 million copies. It should be noted that this game was released on July 2, a full two months earlier than Marvel's Wolverine.
But the issue is that this is Rhythm Heaven: Miracle Star! A Nintendo-exclusive music rhythm game has somehow outsold a AAA blockbuster featuring one of the world's most popular superheroes and backed by massive investment. This matchup was supposed to be a no-contest domination, yet Rhythm Heaven: Miracle Star is now leading Marvel's Wolverine by nearly 500,000 copies.
Perhaps the holiday shopping season could help boost sales for Marvel's Wolverine further, but considering the imminent arrival of GTA 6 and the fact that The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time Remake has become the highest-rated game of the year, turning the tide won't be easy.
