Digital Full Games Account for 78% of Sony's Q2 Sales, Up 6 Percentage Points Year-on-Year

Sony has announced the latest sales breakdown for PlayStation full-game software. In the second quarter of fiscal year 2026, digital downloads accounted for 78% of PS4 and PS5 full-game sales, a 6 percentage point increase year-over-year.

However, the share of digital versions has declined for two consecutive quarters. This metric reached 85% in the fourth quarter of the previous fiscal year, then dropped to 82% in the first quarter of the current fiscal year, and further decreased to 78% in the second quarter.

These figures reveal shifts in different directions: compared to the same period last year, the share of digital purchases in PlayStation full-game sales continues to expand; however, compared to the previous two quarters, the share of physical copies has recovered. In the second quarter, 22% of full-game sales still came from physical media. The current data is insufficient to prove that PlayStation will abandon optical drives, nor can it be used to conclude that the quarterly decline has altered Sony's product strategy.
