Is a Final Fantasy VI Remake on the Horizon? High Internal Demand at Square Enix

As the Final Fantasy VII Remake trilogy approaches its conclusion, players are beginning to wonder what Square Enix's next major remake will be. Final Fantasy VI is undoubtedly one of the top candidates. Although Square Enix has not announced any concrete plans, recent comments from brand manager Yoshinori Kitase have renewed hope for a remake of this classic RPG.

In fact, the desire for a Final Fantasy VI remake isn't limited to series fans; many developers within Square Enix also support the idea.

《最终幻想6》有望迎来重制?SE内部呼声同样很高

If Final Fantasy VI were to return with modern graphics, quality-of-life improvements, and expanded story content, it would surely generate great excitement among players. The original is still regarded by many as one of the best entries in the series, boasting a memorable cast of characters, an epic story, and Kefka, one of the most iconic villains in gaming history.

Unlike other entries in the series, Final Fantasy VI features an ensemble cast narrative rather than focusing on a single protagonist. It would be thrilling to see characters like Terra, Celes, Locke, and others reimagined with modern hardware technology. However, these statements should not be interpreted as a sign that Square Enix has already initiated a major remake project for Final Fantasy VI.

Many developers at Square Enix support a Final Fantasy VI remake

In an interview with IGN, Yoshinori Kitase discussed Square Enix's future direction and whether other classic Final Fantasy titles might receive remakes on the same scale as Final Fantasy VII.

Kitase stated that he is not in a hurry to dive into another classic remake project. However, he acknowledged that Final Fantasy VI has always been one of the most requested titles by fans. Notably, a considerable number of developers within Square Enix also wish to remake this classic RPG, indicating its high popularity within the company as well.

Unfortunately, based on Kitase's comments, Square Enix does not seem to be prioritizing classic remakes at the moment. Having overseen the Final Fantasy VII Remake trilogy for years, he stated that the company currently prefers to focus its energy on developing new games rather than immediately remaking another classic. He also revealed that Square Enix is more interested in new projects right now, but this doesn't mean the possibility of future remakes has been completely ruled out.

After all, Square Enix could launch several new titles before restarting another large-scale classic game remake project.

Furthermore, Yoshinori Kitase doesn't necessarily have to be the one leading the Final Fantasy VI remake. Square Enix could assign other producers and development teams to handle the project while continuing work on other games.

For players, it would certainly be exciting if a remake of Final Fantasy VI were to become a reality. The rumored remake of Final Fantasy IX has also garnered significant attention. However, until Square Enix officially announces any plans, Everythinggj remains speculative.

With Final Fantasy VII Rebirth expected to launch in 2027, the Final Fantasy VII Remake trilogy will reach its final chapter. At that point, which classic title Square Enix chooses for its next major remake may become a new focal point for player attention.
