Sources familiar with the matter say that game engine developer Unity is discussing a potential privatization deal, with a consortium of investors including Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund and Silver Lake Capital as prospective buyers. The proposed valuation is approximately $25 billion. The deal has not yet been finalized, and no formal agreement has been reached between the parties.
Reports indicate that Unity is working with an investment bank to evaluate various options, including potential privatization. Silver Lake currently holds about 8% of Unity's shares, and its CEO, Egon Durban, also serves as a director at Unity. The Saudi Public Investment Fund and Silver Lake previously participated in the $55 billion privatization acquisition of Electronic Arts.
Unity reported revenue of $546 million in the second quarter of 2026, a 24% year-over-year increase. CEO Matt Bromberg stated that this was one of Unity's best-performing quarters since going public, with growth driven in part by its Vector AI advertising and user acquisition platform.
Unity recently partnered with Epic Games, allowing developers to publish content to the Fortnite ecosystem. In 2022, the company rejected a $17.54 billion acquisition offer from AppLovin.
As the Unity engine is adopted by numerous game development projects, any further progress on this potential deal would have wide-ranging implications for the game development ecosystem. However, the acquisition remains in the negotiation stage, and further confirmation from Unity, the investor consortium, or regulatory filings is still pending.
