Nintendo Digital Sales Account for 60.7% of Software Revenue

Nintendo's digital sales revenue accounted for 60.7% of its software revenue, meaning the digital share has exceeded 60%. This data corresponds to Nintendo's consolidated financial report for the first half of fiscal year 2027 (April 1, 2026, to September 30, 2026), released on November 5, 2026, alongside the second-quarter earnings summary. During this period, digital revenue reached 249.6 billion yen, a 60.5% year-on-year increase, representing a 6.2 percentage point rise from the 54.5% share in the same period last year.

It should be noted that this ratio is calculated by revenue amount, not by the number of software units sold. Nintendo's digital revenue statistics cover download versions sold alongside boxed games, download-only software, additional content, and Nintendo Switch Online subscription income. Among these, the growth of download versions bundled with boxed games was one of the main drivers behind the increase in digital revenue this period. Additionally, the digital version of "Mario Kart: World" included in the Switch 2 console bundle is not counted as software revenue but is instead categorized under hardware revenue. This means the actual proportion of digital players on the platform may be even higher than the 60.7% figure suggests.

Looking at the trend, Nintendo's digital share has long hovered around 50% in recent years. The breakthrough past the 60% mark this period is linked to changes in software sales structure as the Switch 2 enters its lifecycle. However, compared to platforms like Sony and Microsoft, Nintendo's digital proportion remains relatively low, with physical copies still accounting for a significant share of its software sales. Nintendo has repeatedly stated that it has no plans to abandon physical games. Whether this stance will adjust against the backdrop of a continuously rising digital share is a direction worth observing in the future.
