At BlizzCon 2026, Blizzard officially unveiled Diablo V and explained why they chose to announce the game years before its release. The development team wants to gather player feedback early and involve the community in the game's development process.
Blizzard confirmed that Diablo V will not launch until 2029 at the earliest. The game will continue its dark aesthetic, with the story once again set in Sanctuary, a land thrown into chaos following Diablo's victory.
Producer Matt Zitterman stated that the team aims to preserve the distinct Diablo identity in the new title, ensuring it aligns with the expectations of long-time series fans. To achieve this, developers need to understand what players truly want and gather constructive feedback early on, which is the primary reason Blizzard has announced the game now.
Under the current plan, Blizzard intends to share regular development updates for Diablo V starting in 2027, continuously incorporating community input as the game approaches its scheduled release. However, the company has not yet specified the update frequency or detailed content of these showcases.
Game Director Joe Shelly also mentioned that the new title will allow players to define their own roles, explore different builds, and hunt for loot. The team aims to drive development based on player needs, letting community feedback help shape the final product rather than relying solely on developers' assumptions about what players want.
Prior to this announcement, Blizzard released the latest expansion for Diablo IV, Vessel of Hatred, in late April 2026. Diablo V remains in an early stage of development, with its earliest possible release window set for 2029.
