Rockstar hopes players will develop a deep emotional connection with Jason and Lucia in GTA VI, similar to the affection they felt for Arthur Morgan, the protagonist of Red Dead Redemption 2. To achieve this, the development team has made the relationship between the two characters the focal point of emotional expression, while continuing the multi-protagonist design.
Rob Nelson, co-head of Rockstar North, stated that the team aims to bring the deep world-building, more meaningful interactions, and the emotional bond players formed with Arthur from Red Dead Redemption 2 into their new title.
The team also decided to continue exploring multi-protagonist gameplay. While Grand Theft Auto V featured three protagonists, GTA VI focuses on a couple. Nelson believes that this dynamic allows the actions of the two leads to have a stronger impact.
The currently revealed content includes relatively quiet scenes, such as Jason and Lucia preparing to go out, showcasing a more intimate side of their relationship. In contrast, the three protagonists in Grand Theft Auto V mostly just tolerated each other, which marks a key difference in how character relationships are portrayed between the two games.
Nelson confirmed that these calm moments are intentionally designed to enhance the impact of intense scenes. He cited the example of Lucia being pushed down the stairs, followed by a cut to Jason, noting that players naturally feel concern when they can no longer hear Lucia's voice.
He also mentioned that the quiet moments were among the most compelling aspects of Red Dead Redemption 2, and the team hopes to incorporate some of these elements into GTA VI to deepen the emotional connection between players and Jason and Lucia.
