Rockstar and the Independent Workers' Union of Great Britain are engaged in a legal dispute over the dismissal of 34 employees. Proceedings related to the case have revealed internal security measures taken by the company to protect sensitive projects such as Grand Theft Auto VI. Documents show that Rockstar compares its security standards to those of Apple, Coca-Cola, and Wall Street banks.
The Independent Workers' Union of Great Britain accused Rockstar of unfairly dismissing 34 employees. In the legal proceedings, the plaintiffs noted that some employees were responsible for "highly sensitive and critical" systems, meaning the company's security and privacy requirements were significantly higher than those of most employers.
Citing examples such as Apple protecting the iPhone and Coca-Cola safeguarding its formula, relevant documents illustrate Rockstar's emphasis on unique gameplay and design confidentiality. The company requires all visitors to sign non-disclosure agreements, and on-site contractors must always be accompanied by security personnel.
Office regulations also include restrictions on remote work, bans on using external storage devices and taking photos, and preventing employees from connecting personal laptops, phones, and tablets to company systems. A former technical director described Rockstar's approach to confidentiality as nearly "pathologically obsessive."
The documents also mention that the company had to install privacy film on office windows after someone used a drone to film through them. Rockstar stated that its security systems are frequently attacked, and employees face cyber harassment, phishing, and social engineering attacks.
Some attacks successfully obtained information, leading to the 2022 Grand Theft Auto VI leak. The company also mentioned the leakage of character names and the recent Cyberleak incident, prompting tighter information management and heightened vigilance.
To monitor and investigate potential data breaches, Rockstar has established a dedicated team consisting of five investigators and one supervisor. Currently, this security system covers multiple areas, including visitors, contractors, employee devices, and the office environment.
