Former BioWare Developer Recalls Mass Effect Development: Worked 21 Days Straight with Only One Day Off

Former BioWare developer Armando Troisi recently recalled the intense production experience of the original Mass Effect. He stated that during an extreme crunch period, the team worked for 21 consecutive days, followed by only one day off.

Troisi participated in the development of the Mass Effect series as a cutscene designer. He said that then-game director Casey Hudson often set seemingly impossible goals for the team to push members to take on challenges, earning him the nickname "Chief Trouble Maker" within the studio.

This development approach helped the team enhance the game's cinematic presentation, but it also led to extensive overtime. Troisi recalls that developers would play movies like The Good, the Bad and the Ugly while working, studying their cinematography and thinking about how to achieve similar effects in the game.

The project faced challenges on three fronts: a new engine, a new brand, and a new console, requiring all technologies to work in sync. The team not only had to solve data streaming issues but also ensure different systems worked together smoothly. Troisi believes that Mass Effect had pushed the technical boundaries of real-time graphics at the time.

The intense development schedule also severely impacted the team members' personal lives. According to Troisi's recollections, the arrangement of working for 21 consecutive days followed by only one day off forced participants to make significant personal sacrifices to complete the game on time.

Despite describing the experience as "really tough," Troisi still believes the final result was worth the effort. He stated that the team aimed to create not just an interactive story, but an "interactive movie," combining it with a complete narrative and world-building, a achievement he remains proud of to this day.

BioWare is currently still developing the latest entry in the Mass Effect series, though it is expected to be some time before more content is revealed.
