"Dark Souls" to Celebrate 15th Anniversary: Three Core Designs Influence Modern Games

Dark Souls will celebrate its 15th anniversary on October 4, 2026. Building upon the foundation laid by Demon's Souls, it refined Soulslike gameplay and had a widespread impact on subsequent action RPGs through its interconnected world, learning-from-failure mechanics, and fragmented storytelling.

From stepping through fog gates and quickly falling to powerful foes, to memorizing moves and successfully dodging or parrying, repeated attempts form the core experience. Upon death, players lose souls used for character progression, giving each encounter a clear cost; bosses that once seemed insurmountable gradually become manageable as players gain experience.

Demon's Souls (2009) pioneered the high-difficulty action RPG mode later known as "Soulslike" or "Souls-inspired." Dark Souls further polished these mechanics and expanded their influence through more comprehensive exploration design, evolving Soulslike games from a single title's experiment into a distinct gameplay genre.

In Demon's Souls, different areas are connected through the Nexus, while Dark Souls places the adventure within the interconnected land of Lordran. As players progress, defeat enemies and bosses, they unlock elevators, doors, and shortcuts that reconnect newly accessed areas with previously explored locations. Exploration without direct guidance thus becomes more like a spatial puzzle, with the world structure gradually revealing itself as you advance.

FromSoftware continued to employ vast, interconnected world designs in Bloodborne, Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, and Elden Ring. Non-Soulslike titles such as God of War (2018) and Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order have also adopted similar approaches in their world structures.

The influence of Dark Souls extends beyond high difficulty. Its combat emphasizes cautious movement, character development, and stat management, requiring players to understand enemy attack patterns through failure and overcome challenges with precise controls. The game rarely tells players directly what to do next, a low-guidance design that later appeared in The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.

In terms of narrative, Dark Souls does not continuously feed players the main plot, instead scattering world information across the environment, cryptic messages, and NPC dialogue. Players can focus on combat or piece together the history of Lordran and character motivations on their own. Demon's Souls initiated this expressive style, while Dark Souls integrated lore more tightly with its interconnected world; even the developers of the 2022 isometric adventure game Tunic have publicly acknowledged being influenced by Soulslike titles.
