"Final Fantasy VII Rebirth" is the concluding chapter of the FF7 Remake trilogy. Recently, Game Director Naoki Hamaguchi sat down for an in-depth interview with foreign media outlet FinalWeapon, discussing Tifa's personality and action design.
During the interview, the journalist asked: "Tifa is confident and decisive in battle, but outside of combat, she often struggles to express her inner feelings to people like Cloud. When designing her actions, how did you differentiate between Tifa as a highly trained martial artist and Tifa when she is overwhelmed by emotion?"
Hamaguchi responded: "This is a difficult question to answer. The script was written by Mr. Kazushige Nojima. Our team read through the entire script to deeply understand each character, then integrated these traits into every aspect of the game. We have immense respect for the characters, but the final decisions on characterization rest with Nojima. In short, we study the script and weave the characters' traits into all facets of the game. For Tifa, rather than simply listing her past experiences or hidden inner thoughts, we focus more on the pain she endures in the present and her complex, conflicting emotions, projecting these feelings into every scene she inhabits within the story."
The interviewer then posed a fun question: Since Red XIII is Hamaguchi's favorite character, who would win in a fight between Tifa and Red XIII? Hamaguchi replied, "Aerith would likely exclaim 'Oh, how cute!' upon seeing an animal, but Tifa doesn't have that kind of emotional hesitation. So if they really fought, Tifa might just knock him out."
After the interview was published, many fans interpreted his comments as suggesting "Tifa has a violent personality," sparking heated discussion. Hamaguchi later posted a clarification to explain the original context: "What I meant was that in truly intense combat scenarios, Tifa would not hold back. Meanwhile, Aerith would try her best to avoid getting into such situations. I never intended to portray Tifa as a violent person. Subtle nuances in spoken conversation are easily lost in written interviews, so I wanted to add this explanation."
Hamaguchi emphasized that Tifa's "no holding back" attitude applies only to life-or-death combat situations; it does not mean the character inherently advocates violence. He hopes players won't be misled by deviations caused by textual paraphrasing.
