Steam Flooded with Clone Games: Hit Titles Rapidly Replicated Using AI

Knockoff and imitation games are rapidly proliferating on the Steam platform. Players trying to find truly original indie games face a task akin to finding a needle in a haystack, easily clicking on counterfeit works by mistake. This August, the trailer for the hidden object game "Needle in a Haystack Simulator" went viral on social media, surpassing 50 million views on the X platform.

But at the time, this original game hadn't even been officially released. Merely after its trailer went viral, more than ten imitation titles with highly similar names and core gameplay mechanics suddenly emerged on Steam, with some knockoff games listing on the Steam store before the original.

These imitation works include titles like "A Needle in a Haystack," "CO‑OP Needle Hunt: A Needle in a Haystack Challenge," and "Story of The Needle in a Haystack." Their game icons and promotional covers show obvious signs of AI generation. Opportunistic developers use AI tools to mass-produce reskinned imitation games in a very short time. They don't need to steal the original code; merely copying the gameplay concept is enough to list them on the store.

A flood of knockoff products is diverting search traffic, severely squeezing the exposure space for the original game. Helpless, the original development team had to add a prominent red "Original" label to their store promotional images to remind players to distinguish the genuine version. A game that hasn't even been released yet must first find ways to prove to players that it is the original.

Gameplay mechanics are difficult to protect through copyright. The cost of legal action and reporting for small independent teams is high. Often, after one batch of knockoffs is taken down, new imitations pop up, creating a whack-a-M.O.L.E dilemma. As the number of games added to Steam each year continues to rise, and AI further lowers the production barrier for knockoff games, this type of imitative and plagiarized content continues to increase. Foreign media have also called on Valve to improve the platform's review mechanisms and enhance its ability to identify and block imitation works, thereby protecting the creative achievements of independent developers and reducing the likelihood of players falling into traps.
