Unlike Paradise will take a more serious approach to observing Japanese history than the Yakuza series, placing social norms and value differences across different eras at the center of its narrative. The game won't deliberately design exaggerated scenes for comedic effect, but it also won't completely abandon the team's characteristic quirky tone.
Director Mikinobu Abe stated that during their historical research, the team discovered that past understandings of "normalcy" were inherently strange enough. Therefore, they aim to convey this sense of distance through everyday life and the historical context. The game's story will span nearly 50 years, chronicling Makoto Daito's journey from poverty to wealth, with the historical environment serving as a significant component of his personal experiences.
A serious social theme doesn't mean the game will abandon unusual scenarios. At the beginning of the story, Makoto Daito will hide on a boat with a smuggler played by Snoop Dogg; upon arriving in Japan, he will also face prejudice. The team hopes to integrate these elements with the themes of the era.
Unlike Paradise is scheduled to launch on Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, and PC on January 15, 2027.
