GTA VI Is More Than Just a Bigger Map! Rockstar Discusses the Balance Between Story and Open World

With less than a month until its release, Rockstar Games has made numerous promises about what players will experience when they return to Vice City in Grand Theft Auto VI. This upcoming open-world game is larger than Grand Theft Auto V, but it's not just bigger. Rockstar believes the company has made huge strides in creating a living, breathing world, while also successfully blending the story with the open world (a difficult feat in many games).

Of course, one of the major features of Grand Theft Auto V and Red Dead Redemption 2 is that players can freely explore without being tied to the main storyline. Rockstar's game worlds have always encouraged players to experiment and explore, and GTA VI is no exception. GTA VI continues this philosophy, with the addition of two protagonists, Jason and Lucia, adding new layers to the gameplay experience. Players no longer need to explore Leonida alone; they can spend time with their partner and have the opportunity to discover exciting content they might otherwise have missed.

Rockstar Discusses Balancing GTA VI's Story Mode and Open-World Gameplay

Rockstar's Rob Nelson told IGN that Grand Theft Auto VI features significant improvements in open-world gameplay, world scale, population density, and NPC interactions, noting that these changes become obvious as soon as players start exploring Vice City. Nelson specifically highlighted the number of vehicles and pedestrians in the game, as well as how these characters interact with the player:

"For us, this is definitely a major step forward in every aspect: the sheer size of the world and the depth of feeling it gives you. When you're truly immersed in it, seeing the density of traffic, the crowded population, and the genuine responses from people, you feel somewhat stunned."

However, Rockstar wants to offer GTA VI players more than just a bigger playground. Nelson also discussed the challenge of balancing the open-world freedom of GTA VI with its engaging storyline, acknowledging that certain plot points require more guidance than others. While this approach won't change, Rockstar has been committed to giving players as much freedom as possible. The story may sometimes take center stage, but most of the time, GTA VI's plot and open world complement each other, jointly telling a specific story (much of which remains under wraps for now).

"We've always been trying to find the balance between freedom and narrative. It is indeed a challenge; sometimes, to craft a specific or compelling story, the narrative itself does need to take priority—at least for us. To ensure the story progresses in a believable way, key moments must be handled carefully, so in these cases, we have to guide the player's experience. But in this game, we are very consciously making the gameplay experience as open as possible—without compromising quality."

In IGN's preview, a particularly interesting example of GTA VI's interactive world was when Jason suggested an activity that Nelson himself hadn't experienced before. During a playtest, Nelson was driving to a pawn shop when Jason spotted a parking lot and suggested he take on another job. This unexpected conversation led Nelson to abandon his original plan, showcasing how game characters can bring new opportunities to the player's daily exploration.

"We're really excited about some of the progress in the open world right now, especially how it reacts to the player and how our various systems work together. Now, when you roam the world, many naturally occurring events happen frequently. For me, that was a truly unexpected surprise. We were driving past that parking lot, and Jason suggested doing that thing—I hadn't even heard him mention it before. And it actually worked—I was heading to the pawn shop, then Jason drove by and said, 'How about we go do this thing over there?' So I changed my mind."

These spontaneous interactions make GTA VI's storyline even more unpredictable, especially when players are wandering aimlessly around Vice City. That said, GTA VI's goal on its November 19 release date remains to let players fully experience Everythinggj Rockstar Games has poured into the game.
