Eiji Aonuma admitted that he felt nervous about the reception of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time Remake, unsure of the final outcome and constantly pondering how players would evaluate this remake.
Eiji Aonuma candidly stated, "I don't know what the result will be; I can't help but think about it." During the development of this remake, some younger team members who had never played the original brought fresh perspectives to the project. It was through their insights that this remake came to life.
The original game, released in 1998, follows Link as he travels between childhood and adulthood to battle Ganondorf. Its dungeon exploration, puzzles, time-travel mechanics, and narrative design have influenced numerous 3D adventure games since.
This remake also faces the challenge of differing experiences between new and veteran players. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom have collectively sold over 55 million copies, introducing many players to the series. However, their open-world exploration and progression systems differ significantly from the more structured adventure found in The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time.
Nintendo's announced modernizations include a significant visual overhaul, full voice acting for cutscenes, expanded character dialogue, an orchestral soundtrack, and updated camera and movement controls. Eiji Aonuma noted that some younger developers had never played the original; they approached the project with contemporary controls and gameplay feel in mind, researching how to lower the barrier to entry for modern players while preserving the title's distinctive characteristics.
The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time Remake is scheduled to launch on Switch 2 on November 5, 2026, during the series' 40th anniversary celebrations.
