GTA VI Edge Special Issue Revealed: New Screenshots and Gameplay Details Announced

GTA VI is scheduled for release on November 19, 2026. Recently, Edge magazine published a report on the game, revealing new screenshots and disclosing open-world mechanics such as police dogs, public transportation, and pedestrian reactions.

Edge interviewed the Rockstar development team, focusing on the game world, characters, and system design. New screenshots showcase different outfits for protagonists Jason and Lucia, as well as previously unreleased locations in the Leonida region.

In terms of gameplay, police can deploy K-9 units, players can use public transportation, and pedestrians will react more noticeably to player actions. More complex situations may arise during heists, and seemingly simple car thefts can quickly become uncontrollable due to dynamic pedestrian reactions.

Open World and Exploration

Massive map of Leonida State: The playable area is almost equivalent to the combined map sizes of GTA IV, GTA V, and Red Dead Redemption 2.

Numerous accessible indoor scenes: Compared to previous entries in the series, the number of indoor locations players can enter has increased significantly.

Fully functional public transportation: Both Jason and Lucia can travel using a complete network of buses and trains.

Extended day-night cycle: The length of the day-night cycle is significantly longer than in GTA V.

More realistic road design: Streets and highways have been narrowed to enhance realism.

Extremely high world content density: Beyond map size, the map is packed with numerous dynamic events and environmental details.

Developers also discover new locations: The development lead stated that even after years of development, they still encounter game areas they've never seen before.

Specialized world-building teams: Multiple teams are split up to handle fictional brands, billboards, radio ads, TV programs, pedestrian NPCs, campaign promotions, and more.

NPCs and Character Behavior Reactions

Dedicated team for NPC systems: Rockstar established a specialized studio focused on developing the game's non-player characters.

NPCs have independent personalities: Pedestrian behavior is influenced by personality, aggressiveness, location, witnessed events, and how the player treats them.

Pedestrian reactions vary by neighborhood: Residents in different areas have different personalities; some pedestrians won't flee immediately and may dare to confront the player.

Visible weapons attract attention: Simply walking down the street with a shotgun in hand, even without aiming at anyone, will alarm nearby pedestrians.

How you hold your gun affects pedestrian attitude: Carrying a gun over your shoulder causes less panic compared to holding it with both hands; some pedestrians may even provoke you.

Room for de-escalation: Players can actively discard weapons, and some scenarios offer opportunities to defuse situations before triggering a wanted level.

Characters react physiologically to harsh environments: Characters will show disgust based on the environment. For example, Jason will show reluctance and retreat upon entering a house messed up by dogs.

Numerous unpredictable random encounters: Robbery victims might fight back, bystanders may intervene during gas station robberies, and other drivers might challenge you to street races while you're on the run.

Criminal Activities and Police Pursuits

K-9 units appear: Police dogs will participate in police pursuits.

More refined wanted level system: Police will track and record your location, clothing appearance, and accomplice information.

Carjacking meets resistance: Some car owners carry weapons and will fight back directly when players attempt to hijack their vehicles.

Vehicle tracking devices: Some cars come with built-in trackers, increasing the risk of stealing them.

Criminal record system: All your actions are recorded, fluctuating between professional criminal and irredeemable thug, visually represented by angel and devil icons in the interface.

Non-lethal options: Before choosing to kill enemies, players can choose to subdue them or use threats and intimidation to resolve conflicts.

Criminal records affect the main storyline: Your style of action will change the story development for Jason and Lucia.

More variables in criminal activities: Heists and escapes are no longer fixed scripts; outside NPCs can disrupt your plans.

Jason, Lucia, and the Main Story

Switchable dual protagonists: Similar to GTA V, players can freely switch between the two main characters, Jason and Lucia.

Emotional bond from the start: Unlike GTA V where the protagonists were strangers, Jason and Lucia share a deep common history right from the beginning of the story.

Couple intimacy meter: The closeness between the two is divided into four levels, and acting together increases intimacy.

Criminal partnership dynamics: Players can influence how the duo interacts and their criminal style, but their partnership remains the core axis of the story.

Whether to abandon the criminal life is a core theme: The plot will explore whether the duo should continue their life of crime.

Influenced by Red Dead Redemption 2's creative approach: Rockstar confirmed that the narrative experience from RDR2 profoundly influences GTA VI.

Overlapping development cycles: GTA VI and Red Dead Redemption 2 had several years of overlapping development time. Rockstar began conceptualizing this highly interactive open world as early as 2015.

The Bonnie and Clyde duo concept was decided later: This core setting of a Bonnie and Clyde-style pair was only finalized after the completion of Red Dead Redemption 2.

Vehicles, Services, and Character Buffs

Personal vehicle delivery service: You can call a service to have your car delivered directly to your location, including any weapons stored in the trunk.

Quick refueling mechanism: Refueling is fast, and a full tank lasts a long time; even with low fuel, you can still drive for a certain distance.

Find cars via mobile app: Use a mobile application to locate specific vehicles needed by fences. The condition of the vehicle directly determines the profit from selling stolen goods.

Food and drink provide buffs: Coffee boosts character stamina, while protein powder provides health bonuses.

Whether it's pedestrians with richer reactions or the endless unexpected variables during heists, even simply stealing a car can cause the situation to spiral out of control instantly.
