GOG Releases First Official Update in Six Years for Mortal Kombat 4 and Takes Over Long-Term Maintenance

GOG has released a new patch for the 1997 fighting game Mortal Kombat 4, marking its first official update since 2020. This maintenance was not handled by NetherRealm Studios, and the game has been included in GOG's Classic Games Preservation Program.

This update primarily improves compatibility and gameplay experience on modern systems, further optimizing support for Windows 10 and Windows 11, and upgrading the 3dfx Glide emulation to a newer version. The patch also adds options for custom resolutions, refresh rates, integer rendering, integer scaling, and anti-aliasing, while updating CD audio emulation.

Controller support now covers DualSense, DualShock 4, Xbox Series, Xbox One, Xbox 360, Nintendo Switch 2 Pro, and Switch Pro controllers, offering hot-swapping, wireless mode, and more sensible default button layouts. Additionally, the patch fixes rendering issues when Shinnok is frozen by Sub-Zero and completes stability verification.

With its inclusion in the Classic Games Preservation Program, GOG promises to continue maintaining Mortal Kombat 4's playability on modern hardware. The game was the first in the Mortal Kombat series to use 3D computer graphics and the last title in the series to be released on arcades.
